More than 1 million people have watched this ridiculously elaborate 'Titanic'-themed proposal
Jeremy Brown is feeling like the king of the world after pulling off a surprise Titanic-themed proposal.
On Friday, Brown blindfolded his girlfriend, Mori Madrid, at their hotel in Tennessee, before taking her to an undisclosed location. She was wearing an outfit Brown picked out for her, one that looked similar to what actress Kate Winslet wore in the movie Titanic — a maroon gown and white gloves. He wanted her to wear an exact replica of the gown from the film, but it wouldn’t arrive in time. He was wearing a replica of the tuxedo Leonardo DiCaprio wore in that same scene.
Why all the effort? Because Titanic is Madrid’s favorite movie — and Brown was about to propose to Madrid at the Titanic museum in Pigeon Forge.
“They both love the movie and the history of it,” Christina Collins, the attraction’s event and wedding planner executive, tells Yahoo Lifestyle.
He was actually planning to propose on a trip to Aruba with their grandparents months before, but when Brown’s grandfather died, he had to come up with another plan. “So knowing Titanic is her favorite movie, he went ahead and reached out to us to see if they could do the proposal here,” Collins explains.
Collins met the couple, who live in Houston, at the entrance to the museum, and escorted Madrid to the bottom of the grand staircase, an exact replica of the ship’s original staircase.
That’s when a staff member started filming.
In the video, Collins encourages a blindfolded Madrid to take some deep breaths. “So what are you thinking?” Collins asked. “I don’t even know,” Madrid answered. She tries to calm and distract Madrid by asking her about their trip to Pigeon Forge.
“She was nervous,” Collins recalls. “She didn’t know what to expect. She kept asking me, ‘Is Jeremy here?’ I said, ‘Do you have any idea where you’re at?’ and she said, ‘No.’ She didn’t even know what outfit he was wearing.” Madrid thought she was on her way to a ball. “He told her they were going to Tennessee to go to a ball. But nothing else,” Collins says.
After a few seconds of silence, “My Heart Will Go On” starts playing.
“He gave us a timeline,” Collins says. “So once she was in place, we started the music.” At that moment, Madrid started to catch on. “She told me she was hoping that he was going to be up at the clock, but she didn’t know it was going to be for a proposal at all.”
As per Brown’s timeline, exactly 1 minute and 10 seconds in, Collins removed the blindfold and handed Madrid a note, which she opened and read aloud: “Meet me at the clock. Make it count.” For those who don’t know the movie by heart, Jack, played by DiCaprio, hands Winslet’s Rose a similar note. “It’s like the movie. … So beautiful, so romantic,” Madrid said in the video.
Brown gifted his love a replica of the Heart of the Ocean necklace Rose wears in the film before surprising her with another piece of jewelry — an engagement ring.
The museum filmed this live for Facebook, and the video has amassed more than a million views.
This isn’t the first time the museum has arranged a proposal, but it’s not usually this elaborate. “We do normal proposals, but those are just, as you tour the museum, you get to the grand staircase and as they are walking up, they propose,” Collins explains. Those cost $100. “But Jeremy wanted to make it an event.” So they did.
“Me and Jeremy probably started planning four or five months ago,” Collins says. They met for the first time for a run-through the night before he proposed. “He was nervous; he was texting me the day of and was like, ‘I’m nervous; it’s almost showtime.’” She told him to relax, that they had taken care of everything.
Collins played a big part in this proposal. “He wanted to take her to dinner, but there’s nothing around here that is that elegant for them to go to, so I was like, ‘Hey, we have a third floor secret dining room here.’ So we ended up serving them a private dinner for two up on the third floor,” she says. They were serenaded with live music during the meal, and afterward, they set off on a two-hour limo ride, also arranged by Collins. The whole night cost $1,300.
They’ve already set a date for the big day — Dec. 22 in Aruba. “They’ve been together for six years, and they already knew they wanted to get married in Aruba,” Collins says.
As for the sudden viral fame, Collins says the couple are loving it: “They want to get Leo and Kate to come to their wedding.”
