Anyone who regularly wears mascara quickly discovers that not all of them are created equal.

However, if you get smudges, flakes, or clumps whether you swipe or wiggle your mascara brush, it might be because of the formula you're using.

Unlike traditional wax-based formulas, these lengthening and volumizing mascaras are infused with polymers or fibers that wrap around the lashes so they don't flake or smudge throughout the day.

"Tubing mascara is great for someone who is looking for the ultimate drama factor, including the extra lift and curl," Neil Scibelli, a New York City-based makeup artist, tells InStyle. "A tubed formula is also pretty smudge-proof, since it seals a rubber-like tube around each individual lash — almost like a rain coat for each lash!"

Better yet, while tubing mascaras offer long-lasting length and volume, removing them is less rough on the skin. Conventional waterproof formulas often require a ton of rubbing and scrubbing, leading to redness and irritation, but tubing mascaras simply slide off with warm water, or a bit of makeup remover, if you so desire.

To condition your lashes and prevent fall out, Scibelli recommends using a makeup-removing cleansing balm that's formulated with gentle, nourishing ingredients like coconut and vitamin E. He's a fan of Neutrogena's Makeup Remover Melting Balm.

"You can apply a bit of the balm onto a damp cloth, and just press it onto the lashes cleaning the formula off in a downwards motion, Scibelli says. "The tubes will slide right off your lashes onto your cloth."
