10. Charlize Theron’s Dior gown

Dior favourite Charlize Theron rocked up to the 2013 Academy Awards in a strapless white couture gown worth $100,000 (£72,000). The simple dress was worth enough on its own but the addition of a few Harry Winston diamond cuffs amped up the value to a huge $4 million (£3 million).

10 of the most expensive dresses in history

Fashion is a multi-billion pound industry with plenty of gorgeous fairytale gowns. But some are worth a lot more than you think.

Custom-made designs – otherwise known as couture – can be worth hundreds of thousands, if not millions.

The top ten most expensive dresses of all time have been revealed with the list featuring everything from Hollywood royalty to lots of pearls.

Of course, the Duchess of Cambridge’s lacy Alexander McQueen wedding dress makes the cut, reportedly costing £250,000 to make.

Other names include Audrey Hepburn and her famed Givenchy dress as well as Marilyn Monroe’s windy design and Lupita Nyong’o’s gorgeous pearl gown.
