A love letter to my socks

There are so many reasons to love Bombas socks that I’m not quite sure where to begin. I’ll start at the beginning of my personal Bombas journey, which is set, surprisingly, in Texas. I live in New York, and most of my fashion-related work originates here. So imagine my surprise when visiting my boyfriend’s family, I learned about the best thing to happen to feet since down slippers —from his parents.

Both his mother and father were raving about socks called Bombas. These socks, said the parents, are so soft, so comfortable, so sturdy — but are particularly extraordinary because they don’t fall down. Due to their “stay up technology,” Bombas had won the hearts of these folks. Steve, my boyfriend’s father, reported that on a recent business flight he noted that nearly everyone in his cabin appeared to be sporting Bombas.

I could not remain in the dark any longer. It was time to do some research. I discovered that not only are Gigi Hadid, Zayn Malik and Justin Timberlake devotees of Bombas, but that the show Shark Tank was part of the brand’s story — and that Shark Tank judge Daymond John was an early investor.

When finally I got my hands (and feet) on a pair, I was an instant convert. Everything I had heard was true — these socks are well made, soft, comfy, and they do, in fact, stay up! But my favorite feature of Bombas’s ankle socks is a special “blister tab,” a cushioned back-of-the-ankle spot that prevents chafing and blistering.

Now that we’ve covered my personal origin story, I want to mention the company’s origin story, because it’s compelling. Founders David Heath and Randy Goldberg came to the idea of launching a sock company out of a desire to do good. They had heard that socks are the No. 1 item requested by homeless shelters. In Forbes magazine, Goldberg said, “I didn’t grow up dreaming of being in the sock business.” What compelled him and his business partner was an urge to help — socks must be new, for hygiene reasons, and so shelters were always in need.

So from the time the company launched, Bombas had a sell-one/give-one business model. For every pair of socks sold, a pair is donated. Recently Bombas succeeded in its goal of donating 1 million pairs in a single year. To date, the brand has donated more than 13 million pairs of socks!

This is a feel-good perk for the rest of us, but the main reason you’re likely to love Bombas is the literal “feel good” you’ll experience when you slip on a pair. The range of choices means even the pickiest among us can find our perfect match. Bombas women’s socks are available in five height options: no show, ankle, quarter, calf and knee-high. There are solids, patterns and lightweight crew socks — cotton, merino and more. Prices vary based on style and material (for context, women’s ankle solids go for $12 when purchased as a single pair, $46 for a pack of four). The toughest part? Deciding among all the amazing options.

No matter what, your feet will thank you!
