The opening sequence of the film, narrated by blonde protagonist Cher Horowitz (played by vegan guru Alicia Silverstone), “So, OK, you’re probably like, what is this, a Noxzema commercial?” perfectly captures the cultural vocabulary of your average ‘90s teen, from the Valleyspeak to the Noxzema reference. Rebecca Gayheart, a.k.a., The Noxzema Girl, dominated commercial breaks on channels like MTV, was relatable, pretty, surrounded by attractive friends, and seemed to have a perfect life documented in those 30 second ads.
