I may not know everything about how the world works, but I know one thing for sure: humans will forever be finding weird little thingamabobs they can't identify and need help from others to figure it out. Lucky for us, we have the kind souls over at r/whatisthisthing to assist. Here are 18 recent finds from the sub and what they turned out to be:
1.This 4-inch long piece of metal attached to a small strap:
2.This paddle with a small embedded magnet and some cut-out holes bought at a thrift store:
3.This 2-foot by 1-foot hinged metal cabinet built into the wall in someone's home between their kitchen and bedroom:
4.This family heirloom ceramic, handled vase with floral decor and a hole in the bottom:
"Looks like a hemming tool for a dressmaker's mannequin. The wire hook would be connected to the pole/stand the mannequin is on, the measurement sets the width of the hem, and the clamp is to hold the fabric and pin it at the correct length."
The original poster, u/butn0elephants, then replied, "Solved! This is 100% it! You are amazing! I did take my sister to pick up a dressmaker mannequin, and it must have fallen off! She didn't even know it was supposed to have one!"
6.This one-foot long, wand-shaped item with a carved ivory handle and metal tip:
7.These three rows of purple dots on the underside of a battery:
8.This set of attached double canisters with screw-top lids found in a parking lot:
9.This steel object found in a rural creek bed:
10.This spinning wooden square hanging from a cabinet near the stove in someone's new apartment:
11.This cylindrical wooden container someone found in the closet of their newly purchased house:
"It’s an old bottle washer, or rince bouteilles ancien in French. I found the same one for sale on this website. I believe there is supposed to be a rod that screws into it with metal bristles. I also found one that looks similar to this, that is only used for wine. Which would make sense coming from Paris."

Gavin Newsom has taken to X to share what he believes is a gotcha clip of Elon Musk being “exposed” for lying about the California wildfires. The MAGA billionaire, along with Donald Trump, has been a vocal critic of the governor’s response to the crisis. Trump even dubbed him “Gavin Newscum,” before Musk described him as a “subtard.” Newsom had sensibly refused to get drawn into the war of words, saying he “respect[s] the office” of the incoming president. But, taking to X on Sunday evening, he
Family Ties star Justine Bateman put Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on blast as “disaster tourists” after they handed out food and other supplies at an evacuation center for victims of the L.A. fires. The former teen star, now 58, played Mallory Keaton alongside Michael J. Fox in the hit series, which ran for seven seasons and earned Bateman two Emmy nominations, in 1986 and 1987. Bateman attacked the couple after they were filmed speaking with victims and first responders, writing online over t

Vice President-elect JD Vance appeared to walk back President-elect Donald Trump’s promises of near-blanket pardons for January 6 rioters in a Sunday interview. Vance, on Fox News Sunday, said the “very simple” process would mean pardons for those who protested peacefully and who he claimed were “treated like a gang member” by Attorney General Merrick Garland. But for those convicted of violent crimes, including assaulting Capitol police officers, “obviously, you shouldn’t be pardoned.” “There’s
The mayor of a Canadian border city says the prime minister and premiers should speak to communities like his about frustration with the United States that is bubbling up over president-elect Donald Trump's proposed tariffs and comments about absorbing Canada."[The relationship] is deteriorating and people are saying they're not going to cross the border," said Mike Bradley, the mayor of Sarnia, Ont., which has a border crossing with Port Huron, Mich."I'm hearing it on a constant basis: 'We don'
Jean Chrétien, who was Canada’s prime minister from 1993 to 2003, joined a chorus of officials from the northern U.S. neighbor who say Trump's remarks are no longer a joke and may undermine America’s closest ally. Canada would never agree to become part of the United States, Chrétien wrote in an article published in The Globe and Mail newspaper, celebrating his 91st birthday.
