From Town & Country

To call this Broadway season unconventional is almost laughably understated. Like so much else in our lives, the Great White Way has been deeply impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic; theaters were forced to shut down in mid-March, and will remain closed at least through May 2021. But as the saying goes, the show must go on, and in this case that show is the Tony Awards.

Originally slated for June 7, the awards were necessarily pushed back this year due to the ongoing global health crisis. While it's not yet clear when the actual awards will take place, let alone where or in what format, today the list of nominees for the 2019-20 Broadway season was finally announced.

The abbreviated season has meant that only 18 shows—a little over half of last year's total—were eligible (in order to qualify for a nomination, a show must have been seen by a significant number of the approximately 800 Tony voters, and voters must have seen every show in a category to be able to participate in that vote) and has led to the elimination of some categories, like Best Revival of a Musical.

Leading the way in total nominations, Jagged Little Pill, the musical inspired by the music of Alanis Morissette, took home 15 nominations, followed by Moulin Rouge! with 14, Slave Play and Tina: The Tina Turner Musical each with 12, and The Inheritance with 11.
