5 times Melania Trump has broken tradition as first lady

As the second woman born outside of the country to become first lady of the United States, Slovenian born Melania Trump is a former model who somehow landed in the White House next to her 6’3″, 235 lb. husband. Over the past year, Melania has been making headlines for bucking tradition, and opting to do things a little differently during her stay in the White House. With recent polls giving Melania a higher approval rating than her husband and Twitter user, Donald J. Trump, one has to wonder: Does the public approve of her IDGAF approach to life as the FLOTUS?

Whether you love her or hate her, one thing is clear – Melania Trump isn’t here to play by the rules.

Here are some of the most memorable ways the FLOTUS is breaking with tradition and doing things her way.

In February 2017, Melania broke tradition by not accompanying the wife of Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe on a tour of Washington D.C. As per custom, the FLOTUS is to entertain the spouses of foreign leaders and guide them around the nation’s capital. Instead, Akie Abe made the scheduled visits to Gaulladet University and a meeting for the National Cherry Blossom Committee at the Japanese embassy alone. The move looks particularly bad, considering former first lady Michelle Obama hosted Abe on an official visit to a local elementary school and hosted a White House State Dinner for the Prime Minister and his wife. It should be said that although Melania avoids D.C like the plague, she did accompany the Abes and her husband to Palm Beach, Fla. for a weekend away at Mar-a-Lago (yawn).

While Melania originally announced that she would be tackling the issue of cyberbullying in the White House, her first year as FLOTUS was slow to show any signs of action. Unlike Laura Bush who championed literacy and Michelle Obama who focused on supporting military families and fighting childhood obesity, Melania has yet to launch an official kickoff to not only her anti-cyberbullying campaign, but… any campaign, for that matter. Melania has however, been accompanying her husband on official visits overseas and visits to hurricane relief efforts in Texas, just to name a few. Only time will tell if she will rise to the occasion and create a legacy of her own.

According to insider reports, Melania and Donald aren’t trying to hide the fact that their marriage isn’t perfect from staffers (or the world). The couple reportedly have separate quarters in the White House and never spend the night together. If true, this would mark the first time since the Kennedy Administration that the President and first lady do not share a bedroom. Many people are quick to point out that not sharing a bedroom doesn’t necessarily signal an unhealthy marriage, but those people don’t have several outstanding allegations of sexual assault against them as well as recent claim of infidelity with adult film star, Stormy Daniels. So, yeah.
