The Kansas Walmart is set to reopen tomorrow morning following a joint inspection from the local fire department, the local engineering department and Walmart’s engineers
A woman died after she suffered a medical emergency and crashed into Walmart in Newton, Kan., on Friday.
Wanda Hoyle, 69, crashed her car into the local superstore’s vision center, per the Newton, KS Police Department’s Facebook news release. The authorities said the woman suffered from a medical emergency, which caused Hoyle’s vehicle to drive halfway into the Walmart. No one else was injured in the crash.
She was found pinned inside the vehicle. The Newton Fire Department and EMS personnel arrived at the site and pronounced Hoyle dead at the scene, reports 12 News.
Following the incident, the superstore was evacuated because of “structural damage to the building,” the Newton, KS Police Department shared in the Facebook news release. “The City of Newton code enforcement has ordered the building to remain closed until the building can be evaluated by a structural engineer.”
The Newton Fire Department shared that after inspecting the building with the Newton Engineering department and Walmart’s engineers, “the building has been deemed safe and released to Walmart management.”
The Newton Walmart then announced after closing the store’s vision center and pharmacy that the store will reopen on Saturday at 6 a.m. “We are so sorry for any inconvenience being closed has caused,” read the Newton Walmart’s Facebook statement.
Walmart also released an additional statement: “We’re heartbroken to learn what has happened. We will continue to work closely with local law enforcement as they investigate this incident,” reports NBC KSNT.
