11 best kettle and toaster sets to upgrade your breakfast set-up

kettle and toasters
The best kettle and toasters for your breakfast ProCook/Next

A successful morning consists of two things: a steaming cuppa and a hot, buttery slice of toast. And if these daily routine non-negotiables are not met, then excuse us while we stay in bed all day. So, in order for us to guarantee this cracking start, we've rounded up the best kettle and toaster sets you can buy, starting from under £50.

But before making your all-important choice, here’s a handy guide on the features to look out for:

What makes a good kettle?

Firstly, design — is it going to colour co-ord with your existing scheme? Secondly, speed, because we have *not* got time to hang around waiting for our brew, and finally, noise, because no one wants a kettle that sounds like it’s about to take off.

Size is another important factor, so check the key specs for its capacity, however most (but not all) kettles have a 1.7litre capacity, which is enough to cater for a big household at a time.

What makes a good toaster?

The first thing to decide is whether you want a two-or four-slice toaster. Either way, you’ll want your toast to pop up with an even, edge-to-edge glow on both sides. And no, we do not want to experience the toast getting stuck inside scenario - the days of poking a knife around to retrieve a battered slice are well and truly over, thank you.

If you're fussy about how brown it gets (hey, no judgement here), look for machines with adjustable shade settings.

Bagels are best toasted in a model with variable width slots that won't squish them, while a high lift function does what you'd expect, meaning no burnt fingers.

Do your kettle and toaster have to match?

Obvs not, that's up to you! Matching toaster and kettle sets have that chic kitchen appeal, but sometimes, one half of the pair is great but the other sucks. Thankfully, all of the ones we have listed below, have both a great kettle and toaster within the set.

Now, whose turn is it to put the kettle on?

Russell Hobbs Honeycomb Kettle and 2-Slice Toaster - £43.90 for the set

Who’s up for a kitchen disco? OK, so that might be a bit of a stretch, but this kettle lights up while it’s boiling – fun! It also has cup markers up the side for accurate filling, minimising energy waste. The handle remained cool during testing but the honeycomb-patterned exterior got hot, so take note.

Meanwhile, the equally trendy toaster has extra-wide slots for toasting chunky slices to your choice of six shades. It did so quickly for our tester, in just over two minutes, and its crumb tray glides out for speedy cleaning.

Kuro 1.7L Black Kettle - £90 for set

BUY THE TOASTER

We love the classic matte black effect of this Salter toaster and kettle set from the brand's Kuro range, which also has a matching microwave and stand mixer, just saying.

The kettle boils quickly and efficiently, and the toaster has a number of settings available, including the reheat option, which comes in handy and an anti-jamming function, so you never have to worry about a wonky cut bagel getting stuck in the toaster again.

Dunelm Retro Kettle and 4-Slice Toaster - £90 for the set

BUY THE TOASTER

If you love Smeg's colourful retro appliances but loathe their sky-high price tags, check out Dunelm's great quality substitutes. The toaster did its job brilliantly, especially from frozen, and delivered tasty bagels to our tester despite the lack of a bagel setting. It also features LED controls for easier use in a late night haze (handy).

Its kettle partner boils a cuppa in less than 60 seconds, pours cleanly and is a breeze to fill through the spout if you CBA to lift off the lid (that's all of us, let's face it).

Edge Low Steam Kettle and 4-Slice Toaster - £118.97 for the set

BUY THE TOASTER

If you're looking for a kettle and toaster set that is going to keep noise to a minimum while boiling water for your very important cup of tea, then we'd recommend the Edge Low Steam kettle from Breville. It's been made with a 50% quieter boil and also more steam surge control so you've got less steam and condensation clogging up your kitchen. Ideal if you've got a smaller open plan kitchen and don't like the sound and steam interrupting the rest of the room.

We also need to talk about the toaster, which has extra long slots so you can toast a variety of breads, aka when you're using a fancy sourdough for brunch with your mates you don't need to slice it in half. It also has a high lift feature, to help bring up smaller items without burning your fingers.
