There Is an Actual College Course on the Politics of Kanye West

Kanye West has made it no secret that he's interested in getting into politics.
The "Famous" rapper has proclaimed repeatedly that he plans to run for president in 2020, and has been more than candid about his views regarding this presidential election, among other things.
For those who have been perplexed by some of the political moves West has made of late, though, now there's a college course that is breaking down the blonde-haired music star's ideologies: "Politics of Kanye West: Black Genius and Sonic Aesthetics" at Washington University.
As for what the 14-week course will entail, Professor Jeffrey McCune, an associate professor in the African and African-American Studies and the Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies departments, told Time the lectures will take on everything from on how West's influence in hip hop can be used as a vehicle to his infamous Taylor Swift MTV Video Music Awards shine-stealing moment.
"I knew my students had connections to Kanye," he said. "They're always referencing his music and performances and videos and fashion. What better time than now to take seriously Kanye West as a cultural icon? I'm always interested in how he's pushing whatever boundaries."

The syllabus will also include topics like, "Who is Kanye West and Why Is He in the Flashing Lights?," "Touch the Sky, When the Aspirant Turns Genius" as well as "I Love Kanye, or How Critique Slips Into Hate."
McCune noted that the course is a "good way to get students to connect issues of politics, race, gender, sexuality, and culture," adding that he felt the timing of the course was relevant given West's impact on pop culture.
