Here's Your First Look at a New Adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma
Remakes are having quite the moment in Hollywood. And now, Jane Austen's much-beloved novel Emma is heading back to the big screen. Here's what we know so far about the new adaptation of the 1815 story about a headstrong young woman and matchmaker in Georgian-Regency England.
Anya Taylor-Joy is slated to play the title role.
Taylor-Joy has starred in several horror films including Split and The Witch, though, if you're a fan of period dramas, you may recognize her from the Masterpiece PBS adaptation of The Miniaturist, which ran late last year.
Autumn de Wilde, who is best known for her work on music videos will reportedly direct, and the script is by Eleanor Catton, who won the 2013 Man Booker Prize for her novel The Luminaries. Other members of the cast include Bill Nighy, who will play Mr. Woodhouse, Miranda Hart, who will play Miss Bates, Mia Goth, who will play Harriet Smith, and Josh O’Connor, who is currently starring as a young Prince Charles in The Crown, will play Mr. Elton.

Naturally, the teaser is full of gorgeous scenery, dancing, meaningful glances, and people yelling "Emma." Watch it up top.
This is hardly the first adaptation of Emma.
Perhaps the best-known iteration is the 1996 film starring Gwyneth Paltrow, though there have been others including several BBC television productions, the most recent of which aired in 2009.
Despite being 200 years old, Emma is having something of a cultural moment.
Late last year, it was announced that Clueless is also getting a remake. The iconic Alicia Silverstone film is, of course, a modern-day interpretation of the Austen text.
According to Variety, Glow's Marquita Robinson will write the script for that project and Girls Trip writer Tracy Oliver will produce.
