While I had my adult braces removed nearly two years ago, the trauma that came with the decision of getting my smile fixed in my mid-20s has stuck with me. I rarely ever show my teeth in photos. And now that I'm self-conscious about the colour of my smile, I shamelessly admit being tempted into buying yet another gimmicky idea: teeth whitening kits.
After being scammed by the falsehoods of waist trainers, vitamin gummy bears and detox teas promoted by the influencers and bloggers on my social media timelines, I've questioned whether not these kits are the real deal. While most of the teeth whitening kits I’ve come across come with a LED light-powered mouthpiece, I’ve been intrigued by the use of activated charcoal to whiten teeth. I like the idea of seamlessly incorporating charcoal-infused toothpaste and powders into my daily routine without having to sacrifice additional time as you would on those LED mouthpieces.
Teeth whitening brands like Carbon Coco’s claim to fame is that their portable coconut activated charcoal-infused products can remove toxins and protects your teeth while whitening them. But with kits starting at $89, I think that’s too much of a risk to take, especially since a study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association says the effectiveness of charcoal teeth whitening is still in question.
But recently, I came across a dupe that has raving reviews that may be worth trying: Piero Lorenzo Natural Teeth Whitening Powder Kit. Just like Carbon Coco’s Ultimate Carbon Kit, this one claims to safely and effectively remove stains caused by coffee, wine, smoking and more.
“I could tell a difference after using it once. I have porcelain veneers on top (which stay nice and white) but I have some natural teeth along with composite veneers (same material used in fillings) that were badly stained and I was starting to lose hope after hearing that nothing would brighten the composite back up to what it used to be,” read one five-star review.
“After one brush, my teeth went from a dull yellow to maybe an eggshell white,” added a reviewer.
“I noticed a slight difference after the very first use,” raved another review. “The second day I used this product I noticed my teeth were a few shades lighter and felt a million times cleaner!”
For only $18, this whitening kit comes with two bamboo toothbrushes and two jars of the brands 100 per cent natural Teeth Whitening Powder, making it one of Amazon’s best-selling teeth whitening kit.

Aside from mentions regarding instant results, the formula is said to cause quite a mess in your bathroom. But for $18, I don’t have much to lose.
