Alex Trebek Will Likely Stop Cancer Treatment If the Latest Round Isn’t Successful

From Woman's Day

Though Alex Trebek's spirits seemed high in recent video updating fans on his stage 4 pancreatic cancer treatment, the long-time Jeopardy! host has shared some news may sadden his fans. In an interview with the New York Times, Trebek said he may stop his chemotherapy if his latest round isn't successful.

"My wife came to me and said, 'How are you feeling?' And I said, 'I feel like I want to die.' It was that bad," Trebek told the New York Times in an interview published on Friday, July 17. "There comes a time where you have to make a decision as to whether you want to continue with such a low quality of life, or whether you want to just ease yourself into the next level. It doesn’t bother me in the least."

The quiz show host has been struggling with advanced pancreatic cancer for over a year and recently told fans he was doing well.

"I've been continuing my treatment, and it is paying off, though it does fatigue me a great deal," he said in a video shared Thursday, July 16, to Jeopardy!'s Twitter page. "My numbers are good, and I'm feeling great."

Trebek ended the update with the news that Jeopardy! will be airing a series of special episodes, including many fun blasts from the pasts, like the first show Trebek ever hosted. He's spent the last few weeks filming new introductions for those iconic episodes.

"Oddly enough, when we started taping I suddenly started to regain my strength," he told the Times, after explaining that he was having trouble getting out of bed because his treatment drained him. "It's the strangest thing. It is some kind of an elixir."

The Jeopardy! team hopes to be back in the studio by September. Until then, you can tune in to watch the collection of special episodes that they'll be airing starting July 20 or grab a copy of Trebek's newest book, The Answer Is...: Reflections on My Life, hitting the shelves on July 21.
