Back in 2016 Alicia Keys publicly announced that she was no longer wearing makeup in a candid open letter and in another act of rebellion just shared a picture of her real, unfiltered, unedited skin texture on Instagram.
In her letter explaining her decision at the time Alicia wrote, "Every time I left the house, I would be worried if I didn't put on makeup: What if someone wanted a picture?? What if they POSTED it??? These were the insecure, superficial, but honest thoughts I was thinking. And all of it, one way or another, was based too much on what other people thought of me."
It's been 5 years since her decision and while Alicia does wear minimal makeup from time to time, she's clearly a whole lot more comfortable going without.
Despite campaigns like #FilterDrop which saw the ASA ban beauty filters from advertisements, we're still not used to seeing real skin texture on our social media feeds.
Some accounts have even been set up showing close ups of celebrities real skin texture without editing, which despite their good intentions only seem to add more judgement and shame onto women.
Which is why we felt so refreshed to see Alicia's latest selfie, which showed her wearing minimal makeup, but with her real skin texture (that we all have btw) very much on show.
Freckles, open pores, fine lines and even a few microscopic breakouts... we love to see it.
We also love to see how far Alicia Keys has come on her self acceptance journey. 5 years ago she said she struggled to leave the house without wearing makeup for fear of someone taking her picture, now she's the one purposefully sharing these images on her platform with 21.4million followers.
As if we didn't love her enough already.
