Amanda Knox Is Being Dragged for Her Horrifying Election Night Tweet
Amanda Knox, known around the world for being convicted and then acquitted of murdering a British exchange student in Italy, is being dragged on Twitter for her hugely insensitive election comment. Knox has long been a controversial figure due to her association with Meredith Kercher's tragic death – she spent almost four years in jail for the killing of her roommate before her conviction was overturned by Italy's Supreme Court in 2015. Since then, Knox has gone on to form a career in broadcasting.
Kercher was in Perugia, Italy, on an exchange from the University of Leeds when she was found dead on her bedroom floor. Bloodstained fingerprints were later identified at the scene as belonging to a Mr Rudy Guede, but police initially charged Knox and her Italian boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, for the crime.
As the votes are counted and tensions rise across America, Knox felt it was appropriate to make a joke about the outcome of the election and compared it to her time studying abroad. "Whatever happens, the next four years can't be as bad as that four-year study abroad I did in Italy, right?" she wrote in a tweet (which so far has received 12,000 likes).

Naturally, it has seen a huge amount of backlash too, with many social media users calling her "tone deaf" and insensitive. "I'm sure the family of the murdered girl appreciate you finding the funny side," wrote one in response. Another was shocked that the tweet came from Knox's real account, as opposed to a parody: "I thought this was a spoof account, but no she is actually making light of the murder wtf!"
A shocking Netflix documentary, Amanda Knox, about Knox was released four years ago, presenting both sides of the contentious case. During the programme, Knox spoke of the experience and divide in public opinion that followed saying, "That's everyone's nightmare. Either I'm a psychopath in sheep's clothing, or I am you. Suddenly, I found myself tossed into this dark place. I was so scared."
Presenting opposing evidence, a Daily Mail reporter also speaks on screen saying, "The friends were telling us how Amanda was behaving [after the murder], performing cartwheels and kissing each other. I mean, who behaves like that?"
Knox has also written a number of essays for Broadly since her release, covering topics ranging from sexual relationships in prison to why false confessions are extracted from innocent women.
At the time of publishing, Knox hadn't commented further on her tweet.
