Although temperatures may be rising, we’re still in the midst of the global coronavirus pandemic. That means that we all have to continue to do our due diligence by keeping our hands clean with frequent washing, staying two meters apart, and wearing face masks when it isn’t possible to keep our distance.
The CDC recommends cloth face coverings for the average daily excursions, but if you’re not used to wearing a mask on a regular basis, they can definitely feel a little uncomfortable after a while. If that’s the case, one alternative that doesn’t sit over the ears with a string or elastic may be just the thing to reduce discomfort and keep you feeling cool this summer.
What is it?
Made from a blend of polyester and nylon, this cooling face covering was actually designed to keep out dust and debris on hikes and outdoor activities while providing relief from the elements. When activated with water, the proprietary Mission fabric cools to 30 degrees below average body temperature in under 30 seconds, making it ideal for staying outside in high temperatures.
The covering is a single loop of fabric that can be worn in multiple ways, including as a headband, scarf, or face mask depending on your needs. It stays snugly in place thanks to the fabric that stretches and stays in place, and can conveniently be machine washed after each wear.

What shoppers are saying
So far the Mission Cooling Neck Gaiter has earned a 4.5 star rating on more than 300 reviews on Amazon Canada, with shoppers impressed by its cooling and sweat-wicking features.
“Durable, breathable and lightweight,” reads one review. “Really versatile and cool. Keeps the sun off the back of the neck when wearing a bike helmet. So great I’ll buy another.”
“This is now my go to face covering when I go out for a walk or a hike,” adds another. “I can put it down around my neck and quickly pull it up over my face whenever I encounter someone. It can be a little tight on the nose for long periods, but overall it’s pretty comfortable."
Since the cooling ability of this mask is only meant to provide up to two hours of relief, you’ll need to keep water on hand to reactivate it if you’ll be outdoors for longer than that.
“It is important to understand that you will have to re-wet them fairly often,” explains a reviewer. “The more heat you are dealing with, the more often you need to wet them down.”
Based on the reviews available, it appears that the Mission Cooling Neck Gaiter really does offer relief from the heat as it was originally intended, and also doubles as a comfortable face mask in our current state of affairs.
The only downside is that it’s currently only available in two colours, and you will need to make sure to keep wetting it for prolonged periods of time outdoors.
