Chelsea can look forward to the future under Mauricio Pochettino with growing confidence after their best week of the season so far.
Pochettino inherited a dysfunctional club suffering from a scattergun transfer policy that left Chelsea mired on confusion and with an over-blown squad.
The Argentine is now showing his quality as he puts Chelsea’s expensive pieces together into a coherent form while also stamping his intense, attacking style on the team.
If the 4-1 win at Tottenham was mired in the chaos caused by the Video Assistant Referee, red cards and offside goals, the 4-4 draw with Manchester City was all about the quality of the football on offer from both sides.
Pochettino will not enjoy conceding four goals at home but will take huge encouragement from the character and resilience shown in coming from behind three times, earning a fully deserved point through Cole Palmer’s 95th minute penalty.
Palmer’s class and quality has shone since his £40m summer move from Manchester City. He showed great composure to put away that late, late equaliser because he will have known what was riding on it against his former club.
Chelsea may not have taken the three points but they will certainly take away added confidence and self-belief from the way they matched the Premier League champions.
