Dentist's viral TikTok explains why you should brush your teeth before eating breakfast

A dental therapist has gone viral on TikTok for answering the age-old question: Should we brush our teeth before or after eating breakfast?

Earlier this week, Anna Peterson, from London, England, uploaded a video that advised viewers to brush their teeth before eating breakfast to ensure optimal hygiene. 

According to Peterson, brushing your teeth after you've eaten breakfast can have negative long-term effects on your teeth. 

“When you at breakfast your mouth becomes acidic, so what you’re doing when you brush your teeth after breakfast is brushing the acid into the tooth and this wears away the enamel," Peterson explained

According to Peterson, brushing before breakfast actually protects the enamel from being damaged by acidity. 

Peterson's video has earned more than 1.6 million view and has been praised by followers who weren't aware that they were unintentionally harming their teeth. 

“I’ve learned more in 10 minutes watching your videos than I have in the last 32 years of my life,” one follower wrote.

“Sending this to my friends because I tell them I [brush] before and then they laugh at me," another wrote. "Even my teacher says to [brush] after."

Others thought Peterson's advice was common knowledge and were surprised that some people may not know when they should and shouldn't be brushing their teeth.

"I thought this is what everyone already did?" one TikTok user wrote. "Isn't this obvious?"

"I thought people brushed their teeth before breakfast," someone else asked. "How can you eat breakfast without?"

Despite her advice, Peterson's video received some criticism from followers who complained that brushing their teeth before breakfast would change the taste of their meal. 

"I don't want a minty breakfast," one person said. 

"I'd rather my toast taste like toast and not peppermint," another wrote. 

According to Peterson, if you're adamant about not brushing your teeth before breakfast there is an easy compromise. 

"Waiting 30 minutes and then brushing would be fine to do," she said. 

In a separate video, Peterson explained that saliva "naturally" brings the body's pH level back up after eating, but i can take up to an hour. 

"Use a fluoride toothpaste, because it will strengthen your enamel," she advised. 

This isn't the first informative video Peterson has shared about oral hygiene. She also shared one revealing common mistakes people make when brushing their teeth, including using mouthwash directly after brushing.

"It's going to give you tooth decay," Peterson said, adding that mouthwash rinses off all the high concentration fluoride in toothpaste that protects the teeth.
