One year ago, reality star Jamie Otis and husband Doug Hehner suffered a heartbreaking tragedy, losing their unborn son just four months into Jamie's pregnancy.
On Wednesday, the couple, who met and married on the show Married at First Sight, planted a tree in honor of the son they named Johnathan, People reports. In addition to the backyard memorial, Otis, 31, marked the occasion with an Instagram post. ""A year ago today was one of the most difficult, saddest days of my life … today is our angel baby's heavenly birthday," she wrote.
Otis opened up to WomansDay.com last year, just two months after the devastating loss, about the loneliness and isolation she felt immediately following. "People in my life, who meant well, tried to console me by saying things like, "At least you know you can have a baby," or "At least you weren't that far along in your pregnancy," but all I'd think is, Are you effing kidding me?" she said.
Last December, on what was to be their firstborn's due date, Otis and Hehner, 36, received news of a rainbow at the end of their storm: they were expecting again. The couple publicly shared news of the pregnancy before Otis was even 12 weeks along. "Women should not have to hide behind Stone Age rules," Otis said of the personal decision of when to announce an impeding birth.
In April, they revealed that they're expecting a girl. "I've always wanted to have that mother-daughter relationship that I kind of missed out on with my mom," Otis told People. "I secretly hoped to be a mommy to a little girl and to have a little mini me."
Hehner and Otis, who "swore to God I'd never let [Johnathan] just be forgotten," made their fans to part of the Wednesday's memorial by streaming it over Facebook Live, even taking tree-planting advice from a few.
"He was only here with us for a short time, but he'll always be in our hearts!" Otis concluded her written tribute. "We will always love you sweet little Johnathan. Thanks for being a great big brother to your little sister."
