It was announced on Saturday (22 May) that Arashi’s 20th anniversary concert film titled Record Of Memories will have a world premiere during the 24th Shanghai International Film Festival (11 to 20 June).

Arashi’s first ever concert film, Record Of Memories will be under the Gala and Dolby Vision categories of the Shanghai International Film Festival, making it the first film ever to appear in two categories simultaneously.

“I’ve shot a lot of live footage, but this is definitely the best I’ve shot,” commented director Yukihiko Tsutsumi. “(Through watching the film) I hope people can experience being in the same time and space as Arashi.”

Back in December 2019, Arashi shot the film during one of their concerts in Tokyo, using more than 100 cameras. Arashi had been keeping their plan to release a concert film a secret, and only mysteriously named this special concert “Shooting Live”. Fans who attended the concert were totally clueless as to what they were shooting for.

As revealed during their YouTube live in November 2019, Arashi was scheduled to perform live in Beijing in the spring of 2020. However, the concert was later cancelled due to the pandemic. Featuring Record Of Memories on the Shanghai International Film Festival is said to be Arashi’s way of thanking Chinese fans and giving back to them.

While Chinese fans were elated at the surprising news, netizens on Weibo were hoping the film could be viewed in other parts of China:

“Can you have a nationwide release? You should at least have the same number of audience as in the Bird’s Nest!”

“The whole of China can only chase idols in Shanghai.”

“Does Johnny’s not know the size and population of China?”

“Are they not considering other areas? China is not just Shanghai.”

“We’ll go crazy from snatching tickets!”

Although it is unknown whether Record Of Memories will be made available in other countries, it is unlikely that Arashi will pass the chance to showcase their live performances to a greater audience.
