This artist will make you want to learn how to knit -- big time

I’ve always thought of knitting as something you did if you had a lot of time on your hands. People who had long commutes or spent hours sitting in front of the TV. It also requires a level of finger coordination that I’m just not sure I possess. I was OK with this until I stumbled up on the work of fibre artist Jacqui Fink.

Sure, Fink likes to knit, but what sets her work apart from the masses of stitchers on the subway is the sheer scale of what she does.

“While I was asleep, a big loud booming voice said to me, ‘You have to knit and it needs to be big,’” the 42-year-old told Buzzfeed.

And big it is!

Fink works with a heavy merino wool fibre and K1S1 industrial-sized knitting needles, which measure around 110 centimetres in length.

“The scale provides a powerful sensory and aesthetic platform to illustrate the beauty and rawness of the natural fibres,” Fink says. “The textures are rich, luxurious and have the ability to imbue both solace and joy to the observer.”
