How ‘The Bachelor’ Helped Colton Underwood Realize He’s Not Gay
Colton Underwood says The Bachelor helped him figure out his sexuality and realize he’s not gay.
In his new book, The First Time: Finding Myself and Looking for Love on Reality TV, Colton said he questioned his sexuality through his early 20s.
He said he still has to “battle gay rumors” when he’s with his girlfriend Cassie Randolph.
Jumping fences, crying buckets of tears, and taking endless amounts of showers all led Colton Underwood to finding love with Cassie Randolph. But in his new book, The First Time: Finding Myself and Looking for Love on Reality TV, Colton shared that not only did The Bachelor help him find a girlfriend, it also helped him figure out his sexuality and realize he’s not gay.
To promote his memoir, Colton spoke with Entertainment Tonight host and Chris Harrison’s girlfriend, Lauren Zima, and he explained how The Bachelor helped him. He told them, “[The show taught me] that I’m straight and I’m very, very attracted to Cassie and women—but it would have been okay if it would have been the other way too. I think that’s the biggest message I have for people.”
Colton added that his main motivation for sharing his journey in this book is to help anyone who may be experiencing the same thing he did. He also said that even though he knows he is straight and wants to be with a woman, he still has to “battle gay rumors” because he shared he was a virgin on Becca Kufrin’s season.

Speaking of his virginity, Colton went into depth about why he waited to have sex. He admitted he used to asked himself, “Why can’t I just say it’s because I’m a Christian, because I believe you should wait till marriage?’ Because that’s not 100 percent accurate. That’s not the 100 percent sole reason why I’m a virgin.” He then told Lauren that his decision was a combination of his faith, his parents’ divorce “messing me up,” being bullied, questioning his sexuality, and “internalizing it all and sort of moving forward with football.”
Ultimately, he credits the show for helping him reflect and decide what he really wants and who he truly is. He added, “And going on The Bachelor was a way for me to not be able to run away from a relationship, not to be scared, and to open up.”
