Watch the Backstreet Boys' Larger Than Life Reunion on 'Dancing With the Stars'

From Woman's Day

If Dancing With the Stars had one message during the fourth episode of season 29, it was this: Backstreet's back (alright)! For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, the Backstreet Boys "reunited" to perform — virtually, that is.

BSB member AJ McLean, who is competing on this season of DWTS with partner Cheryl Burke, was joined by his bandmates Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, and Kevin Richardson in hologram form. The band backed him up for his Cha Cha performance, which was set to their song "Larger Than Life."

"This has always been one of my personal favorites for me to do with the fellows," McLean said of the song choice during his pre-performance video. "But I’ve got to say, never in a million years did I think I’d be doing it to a Cha Cha." He added that, "this is the first time they've seen us in six months together performing," since the group has been on hiatus due to the pandemic.

In a statement on their website in May, the Backstreet Boys announced changes to their upcoming tour due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "We're sad to announce that the upcoming North American leg of the DNA tour has been postponed due to the ongoing concerns about the Coronavirus," the statement said. "Our fans, crew and everyone's health is our top priority."

During part of the routine, McLean and his boys broke it down for a little choreographed section that was pretty *in sync.* And it turns out McLean gets by with a little help from his friends, as he received positive reviews from the judges and earned 24 points out of a possible 30. "What a great way to end tonight," Carrie Ann Inaba said. "It was like going to a concert, we love it."

Fans enjoyed the performance as well. One asked, "can we do this every week," while another wrote, "he world needed that Backstreet Boys reunion." And one said, "I also got a little emotional? I’ve seen Backstreet Boys in concert many, many times — including nearly every summer for the last few. This summer it was a bummer to miss that."

McLean took the opportunity to give a shoutout to his bandmates. "It feels like I’m home," he said of being joined on stage by his friends. "I love my boys. I love you guys, thank you guys. Thank you for the last 27 years, hopefully we’ve got 27 more."

McLean's judges score and fan vote was enough to keep him around until next week. To see his next performance, tune into ABC on Monday at 8 p.m. EST to watch Dancing With the Stars.
