The Banana Was Finally Voted Off 'The Masked Singer'

From Woman's Day

The third season of The Masked Singer kicked off months ago, but it wasn't until Feb. 19 that viewers met a number of costumed competitors, including the Banana.

Fans got a very brief glimpse at the fruity competitor in a season 3 promo that aired on Dec. 18, 2019.

In the promo video, host Nick Cannon delivered the elaborate costumes to the season 3 competitors. When he drops off the Banana, Cannon jokes that costume the celebrity picked was very "a-peal-ing." (We're not sure if the celebrity rolled their eyes because of the mask, but we wouldn't be surprised if they did.)

Initially, fans suggested that singer Gwen Stefani was beneath the costume. This would work with her schedule, since she is not returning to The Voice. It also aligned with the costume, since Stefani taught people how to spell banana in her 2009 hit, "Holla Back Girl."

After weeks of clues, fans finally learned the Banana's identity when he was eliminated from the show on April 22.

So who is the Banana?

Guesses about the Banana's identity ranged from singer Billy Ray Cyrus to comedian Bill Engvall. But ultimately, it was our number one guess hiding beneath the Banana suit: rock singer Bret Michaels.

If you look back on the biggest clues from the Banana's run, you make feel a little foolish for not knowing it was the Poison frontman.

  • The Feb. 19 clue package featured a cowboy hat, which Michaels is often seen wearing. He also had cowboy boots on in the Feb. 26 clue package, which the singer is a fan of.

  • There was also a blue collar, which could be a reference to Michaels line of pet products.

  • The Banana was seen partying on a bus, which could be a nod to "Rock of Love Bus," the third season of Michaels' reality dating show.

  • The Banana said his father recently passed away, and Michaels lost his father in August 2019

  • The March 4 clue package also featured two family members of the Banana giving clues about him. It could have been Michaels' two kids. They talked about the Banana's love for go-karting, which Michaels has been known to do with his kids.

  • In the April 1 clue package, the Banana mentioned that a traumatic injury from his past made him forget the words to a song one week. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Michaels was smacked in the face by a descending set piece during a 2009 Tony performance. Additionally, Michaels suffered a stroke in 2010, according to Rolling Stone.

  • In the same package, the Banana mentioned that anyone whose rocked a mullet would be his "kindred spirit." Michaels has for sure rocked a mullet during his life.

  • On April 22, the contestants revealed a bag full of clues. In this bag was an X-ray of a cat, which Jenny McCarthy said hinted at a cat scan, which Michaels had to get after his injury.

  • The bag also contained bug spray, which some consider a type of poison, hinting at the name of Michaels' band.

  • There was also a Nashville Sherif badge in the bag, which could be a nod to the home Michaels owns in Nashville.

Following his elimination, Michaels was quick to applaud The Masked Singer, deeming it "the most awesome show," and one that's loved by his entire family. He also said he hoped the show would go on forever.

"It’s such an upbeat, positive party," Michaels said. "The world needs it right now."
