The new comedy sees Sennott and Edebiri star as PJ and Josie, two high school senior girls who set up a fight club as a guise to hook up with cheerleaders.
Sennott has co-written the screenplay with Emma Seligman, with the pair previously collaborating on the critically acclaimed Shiva Baby.
Ahead of the film’s wide release in the US tomorrow (August 25), the reviews have been coming in, and has landed an impressive 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from its first 57 reviews.
You can read a selection of the reviews below:
“For most of its tight running time, Bottoms hovers on the cusp of greatness.”
“Not all the jokes land but they do fly. Bottoms, a queer comedy with a chaotic beat, is here to break stuff -- and that’s a very good thing.”
“The film’s unique blend of deadpan and absurdist humour, and its tendency to occasionally push the boundaries of good taste, shows that Emma Seligman is comfortable working on both ends of the comic spectrum.
“This is definitely going to be the first of many new and ambitiously special projects that highlight the gay, lesbian, or bisexual high school experience.”
“What Seligman, Sennott and Edebiri have given us is nothing less than a Heathers for this generation. It hits you, and it feels like a kiss.”
“A high-school comedy that is brazenly gonzo, scaldingly and at times even dementedly over-the-top, and actually about something.”
“Girls are rarely allowed to use their sex drive as openly as Seligman does here. And the way she plays with violence is gleefully amazing. Some sequences in Bottoms are unforgettable.”
Bottoms will be released in US cinemas on August 25; there is currently no UK release date.
