We apologise in advance but the following may cause extreme wincing.

A barber from Japan offers his clients a rather unusual shaving treatment. Dubbed ‘blash wash eyes’, Xiong Gaowu uses a razor blade to shave along the ring of the eyelids.

The unusual technique is designed to unblock sebaceous glands that keep the eye moisturised and clients suffering from dry eyes often go to Gaowu for the treatment.

Though the practice admittedly comes hand-in-hand with potential danger…

Despite having learned the art of eyelid shaving back in the 1980s, Gaowu must maintain a very steady hand and without thorough cleanliness, the method could spread infection between clients.

He admitted: “It was difficult at the beginning, but it became a piece of cake afterwards.”

But is there a method behind the madness?

Qu Chao, an ophthalmologist believes so: “Patients will feel their eyes are dry and uncomfortable when the glands are blocked. When he is shaving, it is most likely that he is shaving the openings of these glands.”

We’re not sure we’re convinced…
