Decorating your space is all about choosing interesting pieces that reflect your personal style. One of the easiest ways to do bring personality to your home (aside from paint and furniture) is through artwork and lighting, or if you're really adventurous, a creative blend of the two.
Since 2012, Nanoleaf has offered innovative smart home lighting solutions that integrate with your lifestyle. The brand has created smart panels that offer far more than just the ability to wirelessly schedule and control lighting through their Nanoleaf App. Nanoleaf's advanced technology includes a Music Visualizer feature that interacts and reflects the rhythm of your favourite music, for truly immersive sound and listening experience.
While Nanoleaf's range of products includes colourful shapes and canvas panels, their latest release, Nanoleaf Elements, combines the brand's inventive technology with a more natural design approach. I was able to try these nature-inspired lightscapes, available at Best Buy Canada.
Nanoleaf Elements Wood-Look Hexagon Panels - Smarter Kit - 7 Panels

What is it?
Nanoleaf Elements is a set of seven wood-look hexagon panels that can be uniquely arranged on your wall and emit a range of light temperatures that's entirely customizable. Although the finished result looks like an expensive light installation, the light wood-grain look panels are incredibly easy to set up. Each panel has an adhesive strip attached to its back that you can attach to your wall without using any nails.
Once installed in your desired pattern, you can enjoy one of the 11 curated scenes (including white LED light or a soft, amber glow) on the accompanying Nanoleaf App. You can turn on the Rhythm Music Sync feature for your lighting to integrate with your favourite music. The lights react to touch, music and your voice and can be synched to smart home devices or Google and Amazon virtual assistants.
First Impressions
I'm not the best with configuring new technology so I was a little hesitant to see how I would fare trying to hang the panels and learn to use them. I was very relieved to see the adhesive strips and that I was able to play around with the shapes without having to create holes in my walls or worry about things not being level.

The panels themselves are the size of a side plate (9 inches wide x 6 inches high) and depending on your space, can easily be designed to serve as the focal point of any room. The Nanoleaf Elements fit a very specific design style that didn't exactly work with my living space but would look great in a minimalist or modern home with complimentary neutral colours and lots of organic elements.
Once the panels were installed, it was very easy to download the Nanoleaf app and start playing around with the light scenes. I think the Rhythm Music Sync feature combined with the range of light temperatures in the whites and amber is perfect for musicophiles who love to entertain and enhance their listening experience or anyone looking to create a relaxing, meditation space.

The expansion into different design styles has been met with praise by Nanoleaf fans. For design lovers, the Nanoleaf Elements light feature creates a unique living experience that adds a depth and richness to a space without looking out of place.

"They are the perfect addition to anyone's home, the Scenes are nice for people who don't want super bright colours and want a stylish yet functional backdrop for their home," one Nanoleaf shopper wrote.
"These are definitely going to be paired with calming rooms with plants in them," another wrote. "This organic feel is just amazing."
Verdict
The Nanoleaf Element is an interesting design element that doubles as both artwork and lighting - but fits a very specific design aesthetic. I think it's a great piece for modern or minimalist design lovers or anyone who likes to incorporate natural pieces and textures into their space but want that added smart lighting element.The panels are meant to stand out as a focal feature and should really work with the rest of your space, but this was something that just wasn't compatible with my personal style.
Even though it didn't work with my space, I do think the Nanoleaf lightscapes are a great investment for renters who want interesting light features but want something that can be easily rearranged without damaging your walls.
If you're interested in Nanoleaf, there are tons of different shapes and colours available to suit your personal style. I think the brand's expansion into different aesthetics is promising and will be interesting to see how the brand's products evolve over time.
