Ah, sweater weather. As cozy and easy-going as this fashion period sounds, its the one time of the year where I find myself stuck in the most style ruts. Don’t get me wrong, I love me the warmth and comfort of a plush cable knit sweater, but nowadays, diving into my fall and winter wardrobe I find myself asking: what the heck do I wear with them this time?

With jeans alone being almost always my typical answer to styling during the colder months, I’ve come to hate how often people throw around the term sweater weather. Because it goes without saying, wearing the same outfit over and over again can boring super fast. And without wanting or having to ditch sweaters this season, I’ve reached out to Shopbop Fashion Director Caroline Maguire for some pro styling tips.

“Sweaters are the ultimate layering piece. Now with offerings of mesh styles and prints — whether it’s animal, paisley, or polka dot —sweaters are perfect for pairing over dresses and can even be worn under denim jackets and blazers. Sweaters are all about the pairing aspect,” she explains.

To make the most out of sweater weather, we asked the style maven to share some of her top styling tips.

Think outside of jeans

“If you don’t want to wear jeans, pair any chunky knit with a midi-length skirt and longer-length max, and even a maxi dress for a more elevated yet comfortable look,” says Maguire. “The same rule applies to patterned pants and leather pants.

When it doubt, belt it.

“Belts have always been a huge thing for us — it’s kind of like the accessory that goes with everything. Chunky or lightweight cardigans are a great opportunity to utilize a belt as a statement and to accent your waist.”

Look for something a little less basic

“It’s fun to have basic crew necks and v-necks in nice solid colours, but also look for things with texture. [Look for] fringe, some sort of print or anything with a novelty idea to it. Alone, it basically makes any outfit.”

Top it off with a sweater (and another)

“I love to layer sweaters on sweaters,” she says. “It [can sound] like you’re melting but it’s such an easy style hack where you can use lightweight crewneck and a V-neck to create a more elevated look. I love wearing a poplin and just layering a V-neck sweater on top of it.”

Embrace Turtleneck Power

“You may think, “a turtleneck is a turtleneck”, but there are so many different variations of turtlenecks for the fall season. I love that idea of wearing a turtle neck under a dress or under a chunky sweater or with a jean jacket. There’s also the chunky knit [turtleneck] which is great on its own.”
