By now you’ve likely heard about how shopping trends change throughout the year, and the benefits of buying off season. While it may be tempting to pick up the latest and greatest new releases, you (and your wallet) are actually better off if you wait to buy until the biggest sales are happening at different points in the year.

Here in Canada, you’ll find plenty of savings during the month of May as retailers offer Victoria Day deals, especially on major home purchases. While many of us aren’t yet able to take advantage of these discounts in person, you can still find the same items online at great prices and have them delivered straight to your door.

In need of a little inspiration? Ahead, take a look at some of the best deals to be found this month, as well as the items that are worth waiting a little longer for.

If you’re looking to upgrade your old appliances, this is the month to do it. You’ll find huge savings on fridges, dishwashers, and laundry machines over the long weekend at most major home stores, which will be offering some of the best prices found all year.

Star Wars Merchandise

May 4th has become known as Star Wars Day, and to celebrate, many retailers will be offering big savings on merchandise and costumes for fans of all ages. Keep your eyes peeled for collectibles and limited-edition items, which may not be marked down, but they tend to sell fast and can be resold at a profit in the future should you decide to get rid of them.

Mattresses

Along the same lines as the appliance sales, mattress prices are set to dip around the Victoria Day weekend as tent sales and huge markdowns are put in place. You can often find savings of 60 per cent off or more, so take advantage of the discounts and invest in a quality mattress at a fraction of its original price.

Spring Clothing

Fashion typically works three months in advance, so while spring may finally feel like it’s kicking off in Canada, retailers already have their sights set on summer. That means that now is the time to shop for spring fashion, which gets marked down this month as more summer clothes and accessories hit the sales floor.

Has all this time spent indoors got you considering a decor refresh? If you were planning to update your furniture around the house, you’ll want to shop the savings this month as retailers slash prices on essentials like couches, dining sets, bedroom furniture and more.

Laptops

If you’re in the market for a new laptop, you may want to hold off on purchasing one for another few months. You’ll find the biggest discounts during the back to school season during August and September.

Perennial Plants

Since perennials can be planted in both spring and fall, you’re better off waiting until later this year to find the biggest savings. Typically, retailers will begin marking down gardening supplies towards the end of August and throughout September as the growing season comes to an end.

Outdoor Furniture

Similar to perennials, this month is just the beginning of the season for outdoor furniture. Aside from potential discounts around Victoria Day, brand-new stock won’t end up on major sale until the end of summer and early fall.
