Beyoncé gave Gabourey Sidibe a compliment she could not accept. Here's why.

She’s an Academy Award-nominated actress, a producer, director, and author, but Gabourey Sidibe continues to work on mastering one additional skill. CeCe Olisa and Chastity Garner Valentine spoke with the multihyphenate star at theCURVYcon about everything from hair to her career path, and the 35-year-old got candid about letting love into her life. “I struggle with accepting love, with accepting praise, with accepting help.”

Sidibe opened up about meeting Beyoncé and being completely unable to accept her kind words. “I ran into her right before I went on my book tour last year, and she was still pregnant, and she said to me, ‘I’m really excited for you and really proud of everything you’re doing.’”

Instead of thanking the singer, Sidibe says she asked her how her pregnancy was going. “I didn’t take it,” she lamented. “Beyoncé gave me a compliment, and I was like, ‘No’.”

She admits that she thinks back to that moment and asks herself why she reacted the way she did and why she couldn’t accept a compliment from one of the biggest stars in the world. Ultimately, Sidibe believes it’s “because I have been taught to be humble.”

Still, she realizes that it’s OK to accept words of support and encouragement from others, and it’s something she’s working on. “Love comes in many forms,” she mused. “I’m trying to be open and open and open, because the more love that I accept, the more love we get.”
