Kicking off the holiday season, Bianca Andreescu touched down at the CF Toronto Eaton Centre Thursday evening to host the tree lighting event, where hundreds of Torontonians gathered to witness highly anticipated, iconic tradition and see the Grand Slam champ in-person.

“We really believe that bringing communities together is at the very core of what we do,” says Sheila Jennings, General Manager, CF Toronto Eaton Centre. “One of the things that we love to do is to have places where Canadians can come and explore, enjoy and gather. The tree lighting is just one of those initiatives.”

“Bianca has an amazing value base for family and friends, which is also very much what CF Toronto Eaton Centre is all about — we thought it would be a perfect fit to have her here hosting the event.”

Before the festivities, we caught up with the winner of this year's Rogers Cup and U.S. Open to chat about being ready to celebrate the holidays with her family.

“The holidays are my favourite time, really. The last couple of years, I haven’t had the opportunity — I’ve been on the road, so hopefully this year I get the chance to celebrate with my family and friends,” says the 19-year-old.

Along with putting the tree up at her family home in Richmond Hill, Ont., the Mississauga-native and high-key fashionista say her holiday traditions also include shopping at the CF Toronto Eaton Centre for gifts.

“I’m shopping for everyone that I’m close to! I plan to go to Aritzia and Zara – you can’t go wrong with Zara” she says. “I also really love Bath & Body Works. Their bath bombs are amazing, so I’ll stop by there.”

Reflecting on the successful year she’s had and feeling like already having “everything in the world” when asked about her personal Christmas wish list, Andreescu started giggling and shyly said, “I still have to make a list! But for sure Gucci sunglasses. I love sunglasses and I love shoes. The more of that the better,” before wishing for another breakthrough moment in her career.

“I just want to continue to get better as a person and as a tennis player and be in the Olympics. Hopefully, bring a medal back home.

As the highest-ranked Canadian woman in tennis history, Andreescu has compiled a 48-5 match record in 2019, including tournament wins at Indian Wells, Toronto and the US Open, where she became the first-ever Canadian to win a singles Grand Slam title.
