There were memes aplenty as the thriller became a huge hit for the streaming service especially as it spawned the viral Bird Box Challenge where people blindfolded themselves and attempted to complete everyday tasks.
Starring Sandra Bullock, Bird Box saw a woman played by Bullock, attempt to survive in a post-apocalyptic scenario after Earth is invaded by an entity that causes people to kill themselves if they look at it.
While it received mixed reviews for its high concept and screenplay, the film became Netflix's most watched original movie after it premiered.
Now, the streamer has released a spin-off with all new characters. Read on for everything we know about Bird Box Barcelona.
Bird Box Barcelona release date
Bird Box Barcelona is available to stream exclusively on Netflix from today, 14 July.
Bird Box Barcelona reviews
Early reviews for the spin-off have begun to surface, with many critics calling it a compelling and "unsettling" addition to the franchise.
Digital Spy's Ian Sandwell explains how the show "lull us into a false sense of security" before pulling the rug out from under audiences and hitting them with some truly "effective horror." Meanwhile, Variety praised its "slick and more expansive" before suggesting that it was a tad "overlong."
Our own review said that the film did a "decent job at adding to the lore of the franchise" but if anything, could've done more and pushed things to new heights. Read our full review round-up below.

Bird Box Barcelona plot
Produced in secret and announced out of the blue, the spin-off will continue in very much the same vein as the original film starring Bullock, Trevante Rhodes and John Malkovich.
An official synopsis released by Netflix says: "After a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, Sebastian must navigate his own survival journey through the desolate streets of Barcelona.
"As he forms uneasy alliances with other survivors and they try to escape the city, an unexpected and even more sinister threat grows."
Bird Box Barcelona cast
Unfortunately, none of the original cast of Bird Box will be returning for the spin-off. That wouldn't be possible in most cases anyway as most characters did not survive the end of the original film but Bullock will not be appearing in the spin-off.
Featuring an almost exclusively Spanish cast, Bird Box Barcelona stars Diego Calva, who was most recently Golden Globe nominated for his performance in the divisive epic Babylon which also featured Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt.

The cast also includes Mario Casas and Alejandra Howard while British actor and Barbarian star Georgina Campbell will also appear.
