Birth photographer ‘dumps’ client for choosing C-section

A birth photographer reportedly refused to take on a new client for “opting” to have a C-section, suggesting that the surgery, no matter how one swings it — isn’t “giving birth.”

A screenshot of the text exchange between the client and the photographer was posted to the Sanctimommy Facebook page.

#tmw (that moment when) your #birthphotographer dumps you for having a C-section,” the client captioned.

“A surgery isn’t birth, my dear. You aren’t giving birth. You are having a surgery to remove your baby from your abdomen,” the photographer wrote in the text message. “That is not birth no matter how you swing it and I for one don’t want to be there to take pictures of it. If you decide to give motherhood a go from the get and have an actual birth let me know and we can schedule your session.”

In a previous text, the photographer accused the client of cutting corners. “This motherhood job is hard, if I were you I would think twice about starting such a job by cutting corners so early in the game.”

The client wasn’t amused — and stated that she never “opted” for a surgery. “I had no idea birth photographers discriminated people for how they birth their babies but that’s good to know. Have a nice day.”

Many Facebook users called the photographer out for being ignorant.

One woman wrote, “Why does a birth photographer care how someone has their baby? We should be able to show their names. Also doesn’t this idiot know that without C-sections many women would die? Childbirth is risky.”

Another woman wrote, “So pissed I can’t even make a joke! I was in labour for 46 hours after being induced 10 days late. My daughter was coming down facing my left, got stuck at 8 cm and po(p)ped. On top of that, I had to be sedated for my C-section because I could feel everything! There is nothing easy about caring for a newborn when you’ve been surgically cut in half!”

One woman even shared a candid photo of her having a C-section; it was taken by a birth photographer.

Women sometimes opt for C-sections even if there is no medical need for it (which is entirely up to the individual); for some women C-sections are considered safer due to medical issues that could affect the pregnancy.
