Blake Shelton Faces Backlash Over New "Tone Deaf" Song
The Voice judge debuted his new single titled "Minimum Wage" during the NBC New Year's Eve broadcast
Blake Shelton is facing backlash for his new single titled, “Minimum Wage,” which he debuted during NBC’s New Year's Eve Special.
The Voice judge seemingly wrote the song about his fiancé Gwen Stefani with the lyrics, “Girl, your love can make a man feel rich on minimum wage.” He even told host and pal Carson Daly, that Stefani’s brother Todd directed the music video.
While the couple has been one of America’s favorite celeb duos, fans were quick to call out Shelton as much of the country continues to struggle during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which has created widespread job loss and financial woes. Many shared their thoughts of his “tone deaf” song on Twitter.

“Does anyone else find Blake Shelton’s ‘Minimum Wage’ song to be incredibly tone deaf to our country’s current state?” one user wrote.
According to PageSix, another user agreed writing in a tweet that is no longer available, “I love his music but the timing for Minimum Wage isn’t great. With so many people out of work and struggling the song feels a little tone deaf. I’d like to hear songs that are more personal. Wish he wrote more of his own stuff because he’s an incredible song writer.”
“What!? @blakeshelton is #MinimumWage even for real?” an outraged user tweeted. “Yes of course @gwenstefani can make a dude on minimum wage feel rich cuz she’s a millionaire. Are you working at the Home Depot now or something? Wanna pay my rent?”
Shelton has yet to comment on the backlash and the song has not been fully released yet.
