Blue Jays clinch 1st playoff berth since 2016

After four long years, the Toronto Blue Jays are back in the postseason.

Toronto clinched its first playoff berth since 2016 with a 4-1 victory over the New York Yankees.

Hyun-jin Ryu was excellent for the Blue Jays, going seven scoreless innings, allowing five hits, two walks with four strikeouts.

MLB expanded its playoff format for the 2020 season, which the Blue Jays clearly benefited from. Toronto secured the seventh of eight playoff bids with Thursday’s win. Tampa Bay previously captured the AL East, while New York punched its ticket to the playoffs Sunday.

Toronto’s playoff opponent has yet to be determined.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. opened the scoring with a solo shot off Jordan Montgomery in the second inning, his eighth home run of the season. Bo Bichette would add to the lead with a RBI double in the third inning, as the Blue Jays led 2-0.

Alejandro Kirk provided the Blue Jays with some extra insurance, adding a two-run double in the seventh inning as his team never looked back.
