Last weekend, the Times and the Sunday Times serialized chapters of Finding Freedom, a forthcoming biography of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle that promises to tell the "true story" of their royal relationship. Now, People has dropped another sneak peek of the book.

Per a spokesperson for the couple, "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were not interviewed and did not contribute to ‘Finding Freedom’. This book is based on the authors’ own experiences as members of the royal press corps and their own independent reporting."

This text, written by veteran royal reporters Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, isn't sanctioned by the Sussexes, but it does offer insight into the couple life and their work, as well as how they operated within the institution of the monarchy, and why they eventually chose to step away from it.

Excerpts published thus far claim to share new details about the Sussexes' first date, Harry's secret Instagram account, the complicated drama surrounding Meghan's father in the lead up to the royal wedding, and exactly how the Queen reacted to the news that Harry and Meghan were stepping back from their senior positions in the family.

And now, People reports that Finding Freedom alleges Harry and Meghan were secretly engaged for months before they announced their plans to wed to the world.

"The couple made their public debut at the Toronto Invictus Games in September 2017 after over a year of dating, holding hands and smiling as they headed to watch wheelchair tennis," reports People." But there was a secret reason for their look of love: they were already engaged."

The fact that the Sussexes were already engaged in September 2017 runs in contrast to the narrative the couple shared during their first sit down interview together in November of that same year.

"Can we start with the proposal and the actual moment of your engagement. When did it happen? How did it happen?" asked the BBC's Mishal Husain.

The couple responded:

Prince Harry: It happened a few weeks ago, earlier this month, here at our cottage; just a standard typical night for us.

Meghan Markle: Just a cozy night, it was - what we were doing just roasting chicken and having ...

Prince Harry: Roasting a chicken, trying to roast a chicken.

Meghan Markle: Trying to roast a chicken and it just - just an amazing surprise, it was so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got on one knee.

Now, it seems, that story is shifting. Get the full story in Finding Freedom, which comes out August 11, and is currently available for pre-order.

Town & Country has reached out to the Sussexes' team for comment regarding the story of their engagement. We'll update this post if/when they respond.
