“I had a really fraught relationship with the whole idea of beauty since I was a little kid,” she told Dr. Mehmet Oz during their television interview. “There was a disconnect between my head and my body.”

Shields began acting at the age of 12 in Louis Malle’s Pretty Baby, then launched her modelling career at the age of 14. Within months she was shooting a major campaign for Calvin Klein Jeans and starring on the front pages of Vogue.

“I think that when there's such scrutiny, and there's so much attention paid to the physical, I just shut down,” Shields added. “Instead I kind of avoided it and threw myself into my studies.”

In 1983, Shields opted to attend Princeton University rather than focus on modelling, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in French languages in 1987.

Now that she’s back in the public eye, the Blue Lagoon actress admitted that she finally feels like she’s ready to embrace her body.

“I’m now starting to celebrate my body in a way that I never felt free to do it as a kid,” she revealed.

She also shared some of her best-kept beauty secrets with Dr. Oz, including how she uses petroleum jelly as her miracle balm to fake a youthful dew and keep her signature brows in place.

“Always, from the time I was a little girl, would just put [it] on my eyebrows, so it keeps them sculpted,” she said before patting the balm onto her face.

Shields also shared that she uses the multipurpose jelly under her eyes as a moisturizer, as well as into the ends of her hair for extra protection against breakage.

“It’s just a good little conditioner!”
