When the eyes of the world are watching an event as high-profile as a Donald Trump state visit, even the smallest moment is unlikely to go unnoticed.

And so it was during the US President’s controversial state visit of the UK on Monday, when a cheeky wink by Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, was picked up by eagle-eyed observers desperate for the slightest whiff of excitement.

The moment occurred shortly after the US President visited the Queen at Buckingham Palace and toured Westminster Abbey.

Trump, and First Lady Melania, then made their way to Clarence House to meet the royals for tea.

The brief footage then shows the Duchess of Cornwall winking at what is thought to be her protection officers as the foursome exit the room.

It was quickly picked up royal watchers, with many trying to figure out what Camilla was trying to communicate.

Mr Trump’s visit has been noticeably short of gaffes, though his slightly odd handshake with the Queen drew attention.

He was also on his best behaviour during the state banquet on Monday night.

The most extraordinary moment of the three-day trip came as Air Force One landed at Stansted airport, with the President choosing to launch an extraordinary attack on London Mayor Sadiq Khan, calling him “a stone cold loser who should focus on crime in London, not me”.

And the second day of his visit is expected to be more fraught with danger, with mass, anti-Trump protests planned.
