Cale Makar the obvious Conn Smythe choice in popularity contest

Nathan MacKinnon grabs most of the headlines in Colorado, fairly so, but if the Avalanche claim the Stanley Cup, there will clamour for their dynamic defenceman Cale Makar to be awarded the Conn Smythe trophy.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: At the beginning of the postseason, we got everyone to, you know, answer some questions and make some predictions. And one question I asked was your pick for the Conn Smythe Trophy? Does everyone remember who their pick was before the playoffs?

JUSTIN CUTHBERT: No.

OMAR: No. Maybe. I guess I said MacKinnon?

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Yes. Omar, you said Nathan MacKinnon. Justin, you said Sasha Barkov. I said--

[LAUGHTER]

I said Mikko Rantanen. I said Mikko Rant-- fun fact. Cuthbert is the only one out of all four of us who did not pick the Colorado Avalanche to win the Stanley Cup ahead of this.

OMAR: That's fair.

JUSTIN CUTHBERT: Who did I pick? Who?

JULIAN MCKENZIE: The Florida Panthers. Yeah.

JUSTIN CUTHBERT: OK.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: In all fairness, I wanted Colorado, Florida. I wanted a 96 rebound.

SAM CHANG: So did I.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: We did not get that. Yes, a lot of people did. Sam, you wanted Cale Makar to win the Conn Smythe Trophy.

OMAR: That's--

JULIAN MCKENZIE: And I wanted--

OMAR: That's 100% happening.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Yeah.

OMAR: Holy frigg!

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Sam's probably going to have the most accurate Conn Smythe pick of all of us unless the voters decide at the last second they're voting for Connor McDavid.

JUSTIN CUTHBERT: Or Tampa twins.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Or Tampa wins, yes.

[LAUGHTER]

That is also very plausible as well, but yeah. Omar, you it seems like you're picking Tampa so I don't know if you still think Nathan MacKinnon will win the Conn Smythe. If you are not going to go with that, I will gladly take your Conn Smythe pick.

OMAR: Oh.

JUSTIN CUTHBERT: MacKinnon's got a shot still. I mean, he was--

OMAR: Now, I still--

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Absolutely, he does.

OMAR: Yeah, but I think--

JUSTIN CUTHBERT: He was amazing in round two.

SAM CHANG: Yeah.

OMAR: But I think when it comes to like players on Colorado like Cale Makar, it's, man. Once the playoffs are done, we need to get back into that whole Philadelphia Flyers thing because geez, I-- man, he is so frickin' good.

[LAUGHTER]

He is so fricking good and like it's unbelievable he went fourth. It's unbelievable he went fourth, man. He's so good. I don't know. I don't know how to because even if I were to change-- even if I were to change my answer to someone else on Colorado like it would be Makar. I think even if Tampa wins, I still think-- I think you pull a JS Giguere and you give it to Makar anyway.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Wow. OK.

OMAR: I'm not even kidding. He's been phenomenal, man. He's been so good.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: OK. That's-- I did not expect that.

OMAR: Yep.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: I thought you were going to remain consistent, but no. Cale Makar, I mean, Bobby Clark is probably still steaming wherever he's at right now about the fact that the Flyers did not get the opportunity to take Cale Makar. But yeah, I'm going to take Nathan MacKinnon. Sam, you can keep Cale Makar. Justin, do you want to change your Conn Smythe pick to anybody else?

JUSTIN CUTHBERT: You're going to give me Andrei Vasilevskiy. I'll take the guy who's not more than likely going to win it, but has probably just as good a shot as those two if it's indeed a coin flip series.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: OK. Good with that. I'm good with that and Omar, you didn't really pick anyone?

OMAR: I didn't really-- I didn't really answer the question.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Yeah, I know.

OMAR: I guess stick-- I guess I'll stan Pat. But like, I love-- man, I'm going to buy a Makar jersey. Like I love Makar, dude. He's so-- I could watch him play forever.

SAM CHANG: I just-- I don't know if you like hockey, you have to like Cale Makar, like--

OMAR: Yeah.

SAM CHANG: If you don't like the way Cale Makar plays hockey, I don't know why you watch the sport.

JUSTIN CUTHBERT: And that's a thing too, like 10 or like 12 people vote on the Conn Sm-- like it is a popularity contest in some ways.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Yes.

JUSTIN CUTHBERT: So if you're like designing the type of player 12 people that cover hockey will want to vote for? Cale Makar is that person. Like people are falling over themselves to present accolades to him so I think it's a good bet for that reason alone. Like people want Cale Makar to be a thing which he is, of course, but even more of a thing than he is.

OMAR: Yeah, Cale Makar is like my non leave Michael Bunting. Cale

[LAUGHTER]

I thought Cale Bunting.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Well, I don't know how you would ever put Michael Bunting and Cale Makar on the same tier at all.

JUSTIN CUTHBERT: He manages.

OMAR: I have and I just did based off on my appreciation for them. Not skill, appreciation. I love them both.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: OK. All right, well. Whatever. OK.
