Cambridge United 1-0 Reading: Fejiri Okenabirhie nets late winner for U's

Cambridge celebrate a goal
Fejiri Okenabirhie had been on the pitch for 10 minutes when he scored the winning goal

Fejiri Okenabirhie scored a late goal to give Cambridge United victory over Reading at the Abbey Stadium.

Both sides created opportunities in an entertaining game, with goalkeepers Will Mannion and David Button making excellent saves throughout.

Okenabirhie's strike from close range came after some smart link-up play with winger James Brophy.

The Royals thought they had equalised in injury time but striker Harvey Knibbs' volley did not cross the line.

The victory moves the U's up to sixth in League One, with 12 points from six games, while Ruben Selles' Reading remain 18th.

The home side came close to scoring in the first minute of the game when Gassan Ahadme's header was saved by David Button and cleared off the line.

Reading came to life midway through the first half when former Cambridge forward Knibbs raced through the U's defence but had his shot blocked inside the penalty area, before rebounds from Femi Azeez, Caylan Vickers and Ben Elliott were saved by Mannion.

The second half was just as action-packed at both ends.

Both defender Harlee Dean and midfielder George Thomas had decent chances for the hosts, while Reading substitute Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan had a curling effort from outside the box go just wide.

The deadlock was broken when Cambridge substitute Okenabirhie connected with a Brophy cross and fired home from just outside the six-yard area for his fourth goal of the season.

Reading supporters thought Knibbs had levelled deep into injury time when his twisting volley from close range hit the underside of the crossbar, but it failed to cross the goal line before bouncing out.
