At their 1981 wedding, the Queen Mother reportedly gifted the new princess with a diamond brooch, which according to the New Zealand Herald, is laced with 18 diamonds, centered with three glistening ostrich feathers and completed with an emerald.

During her life, Diana wore the “Prince of Wales Feathers brooch” repeatedly — styling it into her wardrobe and sometimes wearing it as a necklace.

With Princess Diana’s passing in 1997, the brooch was returned to the Queen and didn’t emerge until after the prince married Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, in 2005.

The Duchess was first seen wearing the brooch at a movie premiere shortly after their wedding.

“It is understood that the Prince was particularly keen for his new bride to wear the brooch because of its association with successive princes of Wales,” the Daily Mail reported at the time..

But despite the fact that the Duchess of Cornwall has been wearing it for years, it still ruffles some royal watchers’ feathers. Fans are taking to social media to call out the Duchess’s “bad taste” for wearing something that belonged to Princess Diana — with many saying it have been passed directly to Kate Middleton — or even Meghan Markle.

According to royal sources, the family heirloom will one day be passed down to the Duchess of Cambridge — but that remains to be seen.
