How can Goldfish give you salmonella?

If you love Goldfish crackers, we’ve got some bad news for you.

On Tuesday, Pepperidge Farm announced a recall on four different flavours of the popular snack food, warning that salmonella could be present. The four flavours being recalled are: Flavor Blasted Xtra Cheddar, Flavor Blasted Sour Cream & Onion, Goldfish Baked with Whole Grain Xtra Cheddar and Goldfish Mix Xtra Cheddar + Pretzel.

To many, salmonella bacteria seems like something reserved for raw chicken and other meats. So how is this bacteria infiltrating your favourite snack foods? The key is in the seasoning. The source of the potential salmonella is in the whey powder used to season the snack, according to Pepperidge Farm.

Pepperidge Farm has been notified by one of its ingredient suppliers that whey powder in a seasoning that is applied to four varieties of crackers has been the subject of a recall by the whey powder manufacturer due to the potential presence of salmonella,” reads the statement. “Pepperidge Farm initiated an investigation and, out of an abundance of caution, is voluntarily recalling four varieties of Goldfish crackers.”

However, this isn’t the only way to contract salmonella. There’s also a risk if the person preparing food has not properly washed their hands after handling contaminated items. While most healthy people will recover from contracting salmonella, children and the elderly are at risk for hospitalization. In extreme cases, it can even be fatal.
