Canadian YouTuber under fire for 'woman's edit' of 'This Is America'

Canadian YouTuber Nicole Arbour is facing criticism for her “women’s edit” of Childish Gambino’s “This Is America.”

Childish Gambino (Donald Glover) released the video last week and it became a viral hit, with more than 127 million views on YouTube to date.

The video references issues that affect America’s black community, including police brutality, discrimination and guns. Arbour says her version of the song was created to bring light to women’s experiences, including breastfeeding, date rape and workplace harassment.

But the video received backlash, and was frequently referred to as a “white women’s edit” on social media.

In response, Arbour wrote that due to the sensitive nature of the original video, she understands why some are “wrongly portraying her video as white vs. black.”

“It was a tongue in cheek way to give additional glory to what I believe is the most impactful piece of art in recent years,” she said.
