An iconic David Hockney painting just shattered auction records by over $30 million this week, selling for $90.3 million.

The 1972 painting sold “after a contest lasting more than nine minutes,” according to Christie’s. Hockney’s Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) went on sale as part of Christie’s Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Sale and was listed at a pre-sale estimate of $80 million, which was surpassed by over $10 million. The British artist’s painting exceeds the record previously set by Jeff Koons in 2013 when his Balloon Dog sold for $58.4 million.
