In an emotional interview on Sunday with Tracy Smith of CBS This Morning, Carrie Underwood revealed she had three miscarriages before finally getting pregnant with her second child.

"I'd kind of planned that 2017 was, you know, going to be the year that I work on new music, and I have a baby. We got pregnant early 2017, and didn't work out," said Carrie, 35, who is married to NHL hockey player Mike Fisher.

Carrie said she lost a second pregnancy in the spring of 2017, followed by a third in early 2018. "So, at that point, it was just kind of like, 'Okay, like, what's the deal? What is all of this?'"

While struggling with her fertility, the American Idol alum put on a happy face in public, and channeled her sadness and anger into her writing. The result is her latest album, Cry Pretty.

When Carrie got pregnant a fourth time, she thought she was miscarrying again one night when Mike was away. "And I was like, 'Why on Earth do I keep getting pregnant if I can't have a kid? Like, what is this? Shut the door. Like, do something. Either shut the door or let me have a kid.'" But at a doctor's appointment a few days later, her physician confirmed her pregnancy was still going according to plan. Carrie is due early next year.

Miscarriage is more common than you may realize.

There's a reason why women traditionally keep their pregnancies secret during the first trimester (12 weeks): because that's when the chance of miscarriage is highest. And there are many more women who understand Carrie's heartbreak than many people may realize. Research shows between 15 and 25% of all known pregnancies end in miscarriage, and according to the March of Dimes, up to 50% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage (usually before a woman misses a period or realizes she's pregnant).

After Carrie's interview aired, women took to Twitter to thank her for sharing her story, and share details about their own miscarriages.
