Cars carrying petroleum gas stable after derailment: CN
Cars carrying liquid petroleum gas are stable after a derailment northeast of Sussex Monday afternoon.
The Penobsquis Fire Department responded after a train derailment at approximately 3:30 p.m. Monday on Dunsinane Road in Penobsquis, according to deputy chief Jamie Daley. According to a statement from CN, six cars were "derailed in various positions," three of which contain liquid petroleum gas and one of which contained methanol.
Daley said the cars, four of which derailed and two of which were disabled on the tracks, were in a stable condition and are not leaking. A provincial safety team as well as RST emergency response team came from Saint John, with crews from the Sussex and Petitcodiac fire departments also responding, Daley said after 9 p.m. Monday.
The CN statement said there are no injuries, leaks, spills or danger to the public. Crews are still working to restore rail service with four cars still on site, they said Tuesday afternoon, and trains are expected to be running by Wednesday afternoon.
Daley said there are some homes and a campsite in the area, about 15 minutes northeast of Sussex, but with rail traffic backed up there is no concern to residents.
A snow warning was in effect for Kings County on Monday, with up to 10 centimetres of snow expected, according to Environment Canada.
"That scene's really a dirt and gravel road, so it was a little slick coming in here," Daley said. "Just, well, regular weather conditions, it didn't really play that much of a hassle in the scene."
CN's statement said the cause of the derailment is still under investigation.
"CN wishes to thank local first responders for their assistance," they said in a statement.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada confirmed there were no leaks or injuries in a statement from spokesperson Hugo Fontaine.
"We have not yet deployed investigators to the scene as we are still gathering information, monitoring, and assessing the incident," Fontaine said Tuesday.
