Celebrities who live in modest homes

Bethany Lyttle
August 21, 2012

Living in the limelight doesn't always mean residing in extravagant luxury. More celebrities go home to bungalows, split-levels, and ranches than you might think. In some cases, it's because a modest home is all that's affordable in the pricey Los Angeles real estate market. In other cases, low-profile digs are an attempt at privacy and a simpler life. For others, the jet-set life is split between multiple cities -- so why put down permanent roots?

Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott, reality television stars
Type: 3-bedroom California bungalow, pictured at top and at right
Location: Malibu, California
Price: $2.6 million

Modesty in housing may not be a characteristic we associate with Tori Spelling, considering she spent her childhood in the storied Spelling Manor, which recently sold for $85 million. But she and husband Dean McDermott fell in love with a Malibu property that was far from opulent. In fact, the single-story, three-bedroom house (the Spelling Mansion had more than 100 rooms) is rather plain. What excited the high-profile couple about the property was its potential. Organic vegetable gardens, fruit trees, a little horse corral and chicken coop could all play a role here.

With the announcement of baby No. 4, however, this plan was put on hold. So the house is on the market. Still, it's easy to envision the fun-loving family making the most of the 2,400-square-foot residence. With its oak floors, big windows and fireplace, the light-filled space, which the couple renovated, would have been an ideal setting for a little bit of "country fun." Another feature? The property is gated -- a must for keeping the animals in and the paparazzi out.

Lea Michele, actress
Type: 2-bedroom bungalow
Location: Los Angeles
Price: $1.4 million

Fans adore Lea Michele for her role as Rachel Barry on the Fox series "Glee." But even with a big primetime paycheck, the television darling decided to settle for a quaint 2-bedroom bungalow, snapping it up for $1.4 million. Not cheap, but nowhere near the tens of millions spent on the average A-lister mansion.

Lea Michele's 1,805-square-foot residence sits in a pretty section of Los Angeles and like many homes in the area, it was built in the 1920s. Preserving its best historic features and pairing this with her contemporary taste, the young actress transformed the abode into a charming place to entertain family and friends. Whether everyone gathers indoors to make a meal in the fully renovated chef's kitchen or outside for a dip in the saltwater pool, it's a delightful place for the young actress and singer to call home.

Next: Nicky Hilton's three-bedroom ranch

Nicky Hilton, designer
Type: 3-bedroom ranch
Location: Los Angeles,California
Price: $2.95 million

Nicky Hilton, Paris' little sister, doesn't mind a basic-looking home. She owns a ranch-style house in West Hollywood. Of course, unlike most 1940s ranches, this one is conveniently located just a short walk from Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, and it's a good thing it has plenty of closet space.

While modest in appearance compared to the ritzy hotels that carry her family name, the three-bedroom residence isn't tiny. It has 4,072 square feet of living space. In addition to its three bedrooms and five bathrooms, the property has a small backyard and a lagoon-style pool. The living and dining rooms are airy and comfortable. And there's a sauna and patio, too. Recently the younger Hilton announced she'd be moving on. So far, the house is still on the market.

Next: Fall Out Boy musician (and Ashlee Simpson ex-husband) Pete Wentz's digs

Pete Wentz, musician
Type: 4-bedroom house
Location: Studio City, California
Price: $1.5 million

When the bassist and lyricist for Fall Out Boy (now on hiatus) goes home, it's not to former wife Ashlee Simpson. However, the home he purchased in April provides a cozy place to land. Just under 2,000 square feet, the house is distinguished by its yard, which includes pathways, a Japanese tea house, a koi pond and faux waterfall. A wood-burning fireplace in the open floor plan makes it a welcoming abode.
