The honorees of the annual Cannes Chopard annual trophy gala were actors Anya Taylor-Joy and George MacKay, but at the ceremony known for highlighting up-and-comers, all eyes were on the jewelry brand’s designated godmother Charlize Theron, who presented the leads of the upcoming film Marrowbone with the Chopard Rising Star award.

The 41-year-old Oscar winner and mom of two, in a white Prada number draped with beads, told the duo: “I want to personally say thank you; it’s because of young talent like you — you’re the ones who are going to be the future of our industry. I’m incredibly honored to be here … as a godmother, I guess? I love it.”

The Captain Fantastic actor and the Split actress can only hope that their careers will reach the heights of previous recipients. The Rising Star award has gone to, among others, Shailene Woodley, Audrey Tatou, and Marion Cotillard, who last night literally stopped traffic — inside the penthouse suite of the Hotel Martinez, at least — with her appearance at the intimate gathering.

The complete gridlock occurred when Theron, escorted by security, and Cotillard, also escorted by security, attempted to pass each other by the entrance.

With her hands on a tall, well-built gentleman’s shoulder and her gaze fixed on the ground, Theron made her way out while Cotillard and her group headed toward the VIP area attempting to keep the train of her very long Michael Halpern gown from becoming roadkill.

Last year’s presenter Juliette Binoche also stopped by, making the Chopard fete her second event and second dress of the night. Binoche took a generous sip of champagne upon her arrival before handing the flute off to her “person.” She was then escorted to the edge of the party, behind men in dark suits who kept cocktail guests from catching more than a glimpse of the more recognizable faces.

It was there, behind the safety of security and shrubbery, that Andie MacDowell, in a Brandon Maxwell gown, was dancing with Chopard creative director Caroline Scheufele, and Theron had spent the beautiful summer night chatting with pal Salma Hayek, who had traded her pajama look from the previous day for a sexy Saint Laurent jumpsuit and high ponytail.

But while the established faces thrilled guests trying to snap a quick pic, the evening was all about celebrating the new.

“It really is when young talent steps in that we see what’s new and I think most of the young talent today is what is inspiring me and raises the bar for all of us to have to step up to,” said Theron.
