Cheers! This Bellingham beer rates among the 20 best in global craft beer ranking

Craft Beer & Brewing, a magazine and website dedicated to those who like to make and drink great beer, has put together its annual ranking of the 20 best beers in the world, and a local Bellingham brewery made the list.

Otherland Beer made the ranking of “products of studious craftsmanship and persistent tinkering, balancing great character with great drinkability... the pinnacles of the craft,” according to the ranking.

Otherlands was founded in 2020 by Karolina Lobrow and Ben Howe, as “a celebration of easy-drinking beer, thoughtful food, and warm hospitality,” the brewery’s website states.

The highly ranked beer was the Haładuda Specjal. The brew “combines Czech malts with Polish hops,” and its “strand of pure, lightest-honey malt balances perfectly with a quick, fine bitterness, binding seamlessly with aromatically sweet, freshly floral Lublin hops, swirling together into a dry finish that simply leaves you wanting more. Immaculate and characterful, this beer is a delicious testament to knowing what works and brewing it the hard way,” according to Craft Beer & Brewing.

“’Haładuda Specjal’ is named in honor of the family matriarch, Karolina’s grandmother ‘Babcia.’ For this Polish Pilsner we use our favorite Polish hops, Lubelski, which are hugely floral, in addition to a traditional decoction mash with Bohemian Pilsner malt,” Karolina Lobrow, co-owner and co-manager of Otherlands wrote in an email to The Bellingham Herald.

The popular brew is currently on tap at Otherlands and can also be purchased in bottles, according to Lobrow.

The local brew ranked among others from Belgium, Alaska, California, Maryland and other states.

Otherlands also serves European-style street foods, such as curry pierogies, French toast, chipotle beer cheese, quiche and soups. The brewery is open from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. It’s in the Sunnyland neighborhood at 2121 Humboldt St.
